  Immediate Goals

  1. Allow animals already adopted to be released rather than euthanized.
  2. Allow animals “tagged” for adoption to complete the process and be released.
  3. Allow the currently existing waiver forms and shelter adoption forms to suffice when the adopter requests to go “against medical advice” of the shelter veterinarian.
  4. Eliminate clerical errors that cost lives by refining policies/procedures and educating the staff. Post/distribute information for adopters to insure the correct process is followed. Use the scanner directly off the truck; call owners of dogs with ID tags immediately off the truck.
  5. Treat all clients, rescue and public, with respect; do not discriminate against rescue
  6. Implement the Citizens Advisory Board per the City Charter
  7. Increase MAS open hours from 26 hours per week to 40 hours per week.

  Benefits

Each adoption brings $75 of additional revenue immediately and a multiple of that over the pet’s lifetime in supplies, food and veterinary costs which are taxed.

National average of pet owner households is 65%. Based on the 2000 city census, there are around 250,721 pet owner households in Memphis.

Goals for first quarter 2008 :

  1. HIRE A QUALIFIED SHELTER DIRECTOR
  2. Establish a definition of “adoptable” with input from the Citizen’s Advisory Board, MAS veterinarian, MAS Director (when hired); Post Monthly Statistics
  3. Implement a call list of rescue organizations to be called immediately for healthy surrendered animals. Currently, most go straight to the euthanasia room.
  4. Employ only people who are humane oriented. Find positions NOT in animal services for those employees with documented incident reports.
  5. Utilize only approved methods of euthanasia with trained, caring staff.

Goals for longer term :

  1. New, modern, appropriately designed shelter
  2. Reduced adoption fees for already altered pets; fee waiver to rescue groups when animal with medical issues is adopted
  3. Video monitors in the euthanasia room to document that humane methods are followed
